In May of 1986 there were several tributes to Miguel Hernández from towns all over Spain thanks to the movement 'Tributes from the people of Spain to Miguel Hernández' (Homenaje de los pueblos de España a Miguel Hernández). Artists, writers and musicians came together in his place of birth; in an time of uncertain and difficult transition, in order reclaim the liberty that had not been present up to that time.

In 2012 local artists recovered some of the original murals and since then, every year, in March, other new ones are painted.

The result is a real outdoor pictorial museum along the streets, decorated with murals where the colours of the paints used become submerged in the greens and ochre of the Orihuela mountain range.
