Orihuela begins the implementation of the national Smart Tourist Destination model after completing the diagnosis carried out by the State Mercantile Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies (SEGITTUR)
The Department of Tourism of Orihuela already has the Smart Tourist Destination Diagnostic Report (DTI) prepared by SEGITTUR, thus culminating a new phase in the implementation in the municipality of the Smart Tourist Destination methodology.
With the completion of this diagnosis, Orihuela becomes a Tourist Destination Adhered to the National DTI model, accrediting that it has begun the implementation of this methodology and taking a further step to be part of the group of destinations that are committed to a tourism strategy of the future based on governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technology as the backbones.
This process has allowed SEGITTUR to analyse and assess the degree of maturity of Orihuela in each of the established requirements and, based on the results obtained, to propose a series of recommendations and lines of action aimed at continuing to advance in the transformation of the municipality into a Smart Tourist Destination.
The report is, therefore, a planning tool that will allow the City Council to identify areas for improvement, establish priorities and guide future actions to consolidate a more competitive, sustainable, accessible, innovative tourism model supported by the use of technology.
A new advance in Orihuela's tourism strategy
This step is in addition to the recognition obtained by Orihuela at the regional level. In June 2025, the municipality reached Level 3 of the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations of the Valencian Community (DTI-CV), the highest level contemplated by this model, placing it among the most advanced destinations in the Valencian Community in terms of smart tourism planning and management.
This recognition, promoted by the Valencian Institute of Tourism Technologies (Invat·tur), placed Orihuela alongside municipalities of reference in terms of smart tourism, such as Valencia, Benidorm or Elche.
The incorporation of SEGITTUR into the diagnostic process is now a new impetus to continue aligning Orihuela's tourism strategy with the national model of Smart Tourist Destination and move towards an increasingly coordinated, sustainable management based on knowledge and data.
The Smart Tourist Destination model
The Smart Tourist Destination programme is a project promoted by the Secretary of State for Tourism and managed by SEGITTUR, whose objective is to contribute to improving the competitiveness of tourist destinations and the quality of life of their residents.
The DTI model is structured around five areas of action: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility, which allow the transformation of tourist destinations to be comprehensively addressed.
A Smart Tourist Destination is conceived as an innovative tourist destination, consolidated on a cutting-edge technological infrastructure, which guarantees sustainable development of the territory, is accessible to all and facilitates the interaction and integration of the visitor with the environment, improving both their tourist experience and the quality of life of residents.
With the completion of the diagnosis, Orihuela now has a roadmap to continue advancing in this transformation process, reinforcing a tourism strategy aimed at continuous improvement, innovation and sustainability and that takes into account both the needs of those who visit the municipality and those of its residents.
